A subjective review of the new MacBook Pro 13″ – part 1

Posted on July 3, 2009 by admin

Recenlty I purchased one of the newest Apple laptops – Unibody MacBook Pro 13″, introduced on WWDC 2009 just one month ago. Due to my job and other activities and time I spend in buses, cars and trains I have been working on two Macs for one year or more. For the last twelve months I used white MacBook C2D – late 2007. After one year I can not complain much on it, except the cracked topcase – which is a factory defect.  Due that I have been thinking about new Unibody MacBook or MacBook Pro. During the opening keynote at WWDC 2009 Apple surprised me introducing the new line of MacBooks Pro that replaced the older Unibody MacBook line with the FireWire 800 and SD Card slot. I didn’t hesitate and bought it on very first day when it appeared in the local store of one of the Polish Apple resellers.

Because I am replacing the old white MacBook with a new MacBOok Pro 13″, I will compare those two machines. I presume there will be more such swaps than swaping the lest than one year old unibody MacBooks with new MacBooks Pro.

Let’s start from the beginning – the cardboard box. The new cardboard box is much smaller than the one for white MacBook. While the dimensions of both computers are rather the same, the cardboard box of new MacBook Pro 13″ is visibly smaller. The smaller box saves a lot of paper used to produce the cardboard.

The same inside, the thick cube box with manuals and DVDs are replaced with much slimmer and wider black envelope.

Size of the old white MacBook and new MacBook Pro 13″ is almost the same. New MaBook Pro 13″ likewise Unibody MacBook is a bit thinner than the old white plastic MacBook.

In relation to  MacBook 13″ Unibody models, their new incarnation, prompted to the group of Pro, is equipped with FireWire 800 and, like almost all new models of MacBook Pro with SD card slot. However, there are no pros without coons – new MacBook Pro 13 ‘has a common Audio In / Out nest. Compared to the MacBook White, the number of ports is similar. Lan and two USB slots, FireWire 400 was replaced with FireWire 800, old external monitor nest was replaced with the new one, and of course SD Card slot was added. there is also battery indicator moved from the the bottom to the same side of the laptop as mentioned nests.
