MAME OS X – the magic of arcade games on Mac OS X

At the end of the first half of nineteen eighties I have met for the first time 8bit computers. Around the same time, but a little earlier, on the empty, asphalt square on one of the concrete blockhouses estates in Lodz, appeared the car or wagon full of the miracles and sounds that made all of the boys from my neighborhood completely amazed. Inside the car flashed color screens and sounds, we were tempted by the first slot arcade games. The arcade fever begun, adopting different names, i.e. Moon Patrol, Ghost n’Goblins or Commando. The symptoms were typical and the same in all cases, counting down the school lessons and looking unwittingly through the window, problems with grades and, besides, the worst symptom was the emptiness in the pockets.
At the time of the biggest economic crisis, the allowance of the average boy of 3 or 4 class of primary school was very low or almost none. Each of us could afford maximum of 2 and sometimes 3 games a day or less. Accordingly, each machine typically was surrounded by the group of kids, for which the watching their friend’s game was already entertaining. Mr Boss – the communist time entrepreneur – made a treasure on kids, and the vicinity of later expanded into a regular amusement arcade place, was always dangerous place where it was very easy to be assualted by several years older strapper, who just have ran out of money and couldn’t play more his favorite Donkey Kong game.
Those days gone for good and it is better that they do not return. But the old games can return. This time, thanks to the excellent emulator for Mac OS X – MAME OS X. The program is fairly intuitive in operation. Only the process of changing the default keyboard configuration is not as intuitive (access via menu on the game screen by pressing the [TAB]). A bit misleading is the automatic game titles’ update, which is carried out at the application startup. It seems that games are being downloaded, however MAME OS X does not receive any of the them. We have to download games (ROMs) by ourselves. Finding them is no problem, just use the search engine.
